Department Description

The Department of Basic Sciences was established in the College of Agriculture in 1988. It is concerned with the basic sciences and principles that students of the College of Agriculture need at the beginning of their scientific career in the college.

The Department of Basic Sciences deals with first- and second-year students, introducing them to a set of courses and information that is the cornerstone of subsequent years' courses.

The department follows a set of courses that complement each other and are distributed over the first and second semesters. It learns about the botany course, which defines the plant cell, its basic components and characteristics, the tissues that compose it, and the organs that are later formed from these tissues. The botanical classification course comes to use these specifications as criteria for plant classification and identification. On plant species and genera and their evolution.

The student studies the general and analytical chemistry course, and in the second semester completes his chemical knowledge in the organic chemistry course.

He takes the mathematical foundations and probabilities in the mathematics course, is exposed to the physical properties of the subjects in the physics course, and learns about the foundations of animal classification, life cycles, and anatomy in the zoology course.

Then he comes in the second year to begin in the first semester by identifying the characteristics of the genetic material and the foundations of its inheritance and its responsibility for the traits of the individual through the course of genetics, which is supplemented by learning about the precise mechanism of work of genes, the foundations of genetic engineering and the methods of producing genetically modified plants in the molecular biology course in the second semester.
